Sarasota Memorial Hospital is the anchor of Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, a regional medical center located in Sarasota County on Florida's Gulf Coast. With nearly 4,000 staff members, 800 physicians and more than 1,000 volunteers, it is the second-largest acute care public hospital in Florida and Sarasota County's second-largest employer. Sarasota Memorial is among the 20 largest public hospitals in the United States.
The hospital â" first named Sarasota Hospital â" was the communityâs first modern hospital. It opened its doors on November 2, 1925, replacing a temporary "tent hospital" and six-bed facility that had been used to treat patients with a modest 32-bed facility run by the county's welfare association.
Today, that modest facility has grown into the Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, a regional referral center with an 819-bed hospital and seven outpatient facilities, including a free-standing ER (its second Emergency Care Center), five urgent care centers, long- and short-term skilled nursing center, home health services, laboratory and imaging centers and specialty campuses stretching beyond the county lines.
Sarasota Memorial is a full-service community health care system, providing many specialty care services, including heart and vascular, cancer, neuroscience services, orthopedic services, outpatient services, home health care, rehabilitative care and geriatric and long-term care. Sarasota Memorial is the only provider of obstetrical services and has the only Level III neonatal intensive care unit in Sarasota County.
The hospital is one of the first non-academic hospitals in the nation to develop a clinical research service that conducts studies in lung disease, cardiology and vascular disease, geriatric medicine and other specialty areas.
Sarasota Memorialâs Courtyard Tower
Sarasota Memorialâs Courtyard Tower is a nine-story, state-of-the-art facility. Three full floors are dedicated to Mother and Baby services, including: a Labor & Delivery floor, Mother-Baby floor, and an entire floor for the hospital's Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. There are two Cardiac floors and a full floor dedicated to Orthopedics. The $250 million-dollar patient tower replaces about 220 beds from outdated 1960s-era areas of the hospital, adding more private rooms and the most advanced equipment and technology throughout. It's a more patient-centered environment, featuring serene landscaped courtyards, fully appointed patient departure lounge, high-tech HealthConnection communication hub, and many comfortable spaces for visitors to relax, regroup, and refresh. Courtyard Tower has been fortified with the latest hurricane proofing available to help ensure continuing patient care in the event of a severe storm.
Sarasota Memorial's focus on campus improvement continues with its comprehensive new five-story Rehabilitation Pavilion, scheduled to open in December 2016.

As a state-certified Comprehensive Stroke Center, Sarasota Memorial can provide a wider range of advanced treatment options, neuro and emergency specialists and comprehensive services beyond the scope of primary stroke centers. Studies show that 30 to 35 percent of stroke patients suffer complex stroke types, severe deficits or multiple organs affected that require the higher level of care offered in Comprehensive Stroke Centers.
Sarasota Memorial has been certified âwith distinctionâ by the Joint Commission for National Quality Approval and given its âGold Seal of Approvalâ for providing the greatest breadth and depth of specialists and advanced services for stroke patients. The hospital has achieved recognition as a Center of Distinction from Cigna for Craniotomy and Stroke Care. And is recipient of HealthGrades Stroke Care Excellence Award 5 years in a row (2009-2013).

New York's Columbia University is ranked among the nation's top academic medical schools and cardiovascular teaching programs. The partnership provides patients in Southwest Florida and beyond greater access to the latest innovations and treatment options in cardiac care.
Magnet Nursing designation
Since 2003, Sarasota Memorial also has been awarded Magnet Nursing Services Recognition, the nationâs highest honor for excellence in nursing. Given by the American Nursesâ Credentialing Center, the premier authority on nursing, Magnet recognition means that Sarasota Memorial provides a supportive environment that attracts and retains the best and brightest caregivers. Sarasota Memorial is the only hospital in the region to earn this designation three times in a row. It's an accomplishment so rare, in fact, only 1% of all hospitals nationally have achieved it. To be recognized as a Magnet hospital, applicants must pass a rigorous review and meet criteria indicating superiority in all aspects of nursing services. Independently sponsored research projects suggest that Magnet facilities have positive outcomes for patients, nurses and workplaces.
Surgical innovations
In many cases, minimally invasive and robotic surgery at Sarasota Memorial has replaced traditional open surgery as the gold standard in care. Currently, there are more than 100 of these types of procedures commonly performed by Sarasota Memorial surgeons. Robotic surgery, in particular, continues to expand into more specialties because of its many benefits for patients, including:
- Reduced pain and trauma
- Fewer complications
- Less risk of infection
- Less risk of blood loss, fewer transfusions
- Shorter hospital stays
- Faster recovery
- Quicker return to normal activities
Sarasota Memorialâs Robotic Surgery Program Sarasota Memorial is proud to have been the first hospital in Southwest Florida to pioneer da Vinci robotic surgery for patients. Now, with four robots and the hospitalâs team of 22 da Vinci-trained surgeons in six specialties offers the most experienced program in the region.
A prime example is Sarasota Memorialâs robotic cardiac program. The hospital leads the nation in minimally invasive cardiac procedures. With a dedicated robotic cardiovascular surgery suite, Sarasotaâs cardiac surgeons are employing minimally invasive robotic surgical techniques in a range of cardiac and thoracic procedures, including: mitral valve repair, coronary artery bypass, repair of atrial septal defects, tricuspid valve repairs, thymectomy, lobectomy and VATS lung resection.
iSuites/iORs Sarasota Memorialâs iSuite is the most technologically advanced suite of operating rooms (also called iORs) in the region. Housed in a state-of-the-art surgery wing, the iSuiteâs four iORs feature multiple high-definition cameras and digital monitors, interlinked with voice-activated surgical equipment and room controls. The rooms, outfitted for robotic procedures, as needed, equip surgeons with real-time electronic medical records, two-way videoconferencing and more.
Hybrid OR Sarasota Memorialâs new hybrid cardiac catheterization lab-surgical suite is designed with all of the technology and services of cardiac surgery, vascular surgery and interventional cardiology integrated in one room. In this next-generation operating suite, patients donât have to undergo multiple procedures on different days or be moved to separate procedure rooms to complete their care.
Procedures performed in the new hybrid rooms include minimally invasive methods to fix and repair heart valves, correct abnormal heartbeats and place stents to fix diseased or damaged heart vessels. The hybrid approach allows patients, for example, to receive a cardiac catheterization to check coronary arteries before planned valve surgeries or undergo a hybrid stent procedure and valve surgery at the same time.
Safety Net hospital
Despite its tremendous growth and all its honors, Sarasota Countyâs only publicly owned hospital remains the only not-for-profit hospital in the surrounding 4-county region and provider of safety net of care for the community.
