History

Northside Hospital - Atlanta

1000 Johnson Ferry Road NE Atlanta, GA

Northside Hospital opened its doors and treated its first patient on July 6, 1970. The original 245-bed, five-story facility, located approximately 15 miles north of downtown Atlanta, opened with a 24-hour emergency department, 80 physicians and more than 400 other professionals. In the four decades since its beginning, Northside has undergone a dramatic transformation and now has more than 2,300 physicians and 537 licensed beds in its Atlanta hospital.

Over the years, Northside has experienced numerous expansions and developments. Five years after its opening, for example, the hospital completed its Behavioral Health Wing. Radiation and CT facilities were added in 1977. By 1985, Northside’s first Child Care Center was completed, and a year later the 5-story South Tower was finished. A new Emergency Department was completed in 1995, and in 2007 four floors were added to the Women’s Center. In 2010 a new 36-bed Bone Marrow Transplant/ Leukemia Unit was completed.

Northside Hospital â€" Forsyth

1200 Northside Forsyth Drive Cumming, GA

In 1946, the first hospital in Forsyth County, Georgia, the Mary Alice Hospital, was established by Dr. James Mashburn. The hospital was later bought by Georgia Baptist and renamed Baptist Medical Center. In 1999, Georgia Baptist rebuilt the hospital, and Northside Hospital acquired it in October 2002, renaming it Northside Hospital-Forsyth.

Today, the 217-bed, not-for-profit community hospital and its four adjacent medical office buildings reside on 150 acres, with more than 700,000 square feet, in Cumming. The hospital has a medical staff of nearly 2,300 physicians and 2,200 employees.

Northside Hospital-Forsyth opened its Women’s Center on Aug. 6, 2008, bringing maternity and newborn services closer to home. The hospital also delivered its first baby â€" the first baby to be born at a Forsyth County hospital in more than 25 years. In 2013, the hospital was approved to offer a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The new designation by Georgia’s Department of Community Health allows Northside Hospital-Forsyth to establish a four-bed NICU, in addition to its existing 17-bed Neonatal Intermediate Care Unit, or Level-II unit.

In June 2012, Northside Hospital-Forsyth opened a new four-suite outpatient surgery center, located off of Ga. 20 at Haw Creek Drive. The Northside-Forsyth Outpatient Surgery Center provides physicians and patients easy access to procedures in the specialties of GI, general surgery, ophthalmology, minor orthopedics including hand surgery, podiatric surgery and plastic and cosmetic surgery.

The new Northside/Dawson Medical Campus opened in December 2012 and is located just north of the outlet mall on GA 400 in Dawsonville. The 34,500-square-foot, three-story medical office building gives Northside the space to expand its imaging services and offer a wider array of medical services. The facility is home to a number of physician practices, representing numerous medical specialties including cardiology, OB/GYN, gastroenterology (GI), pulmonology and general surgery.

Northside Hospital â€" Cherokee

201 Hospital Road Canton, GA

In April 1962, R.T. Jones Memorial Hospital opened its doors in Canton, Georgia, with 62 semi-private rooms and 17 physicians on staff. In October 1997, with approximately 100 physicians, the hospital joined the Northside Hospital system and became Northside Hospital-Cherokee.

Northside Hospital-Cherokee has since grown to include 84 beds, more than 400 physicians and nearly 1,200 employees. In 2012, Northside announced plans to relocate Northside Hospital-Cherokee to a new location off Interstate 575 at the Ga. Hwy. 20 exit. The project, to open in May 2017, will include an 84-bed hospital facility, a distinct Women’s Center, a Multispecialty Medical Office Building and Cancer Center, and a 600-space parking deck and 300 surface parking spaces.

In 2011, the hospital completed an expansion of the Emergency Department, which included additional exam/treatment rooms and renovation of all existing rooms, new dedicated triage rooms, a new covered entrance and more.

In 2010, Northside opened Northside/Holly Springs Imaging, Cherokee County’s first full-service imaging center. In September 2013, Northside opened its newest facility, the Northside-Cherokee Towne Lake Medical Campus, located at 900 Towne Lake Parkway in Woodstock.
